GC Marshall – the organizer of victory (according to Churchill)
George Catlett Marshall (December 31, 1880 – October 16, 1959) was the U.S. Army Chief of Staff during WW II and acted as chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
He organized the largest military expansion in U.S. history, turning an outmoded, poorly-equipped army of 189,000 men into an effective force of over eight million soldiers between 1939 - 1942.
Time Magazine named Marshall Man of the Year in 1944 and again in 1948 for the European Recovery Program - or the Marshall Plan as it became known - for which he was also awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. The Marshall Plan would help Europe quickly rebuild and modernize its economy in the aftermath of WW II.
We adopted his name because the skills, vision and energy he demonstrated in executing grand scale plans under severe circumstances epitomize precisely what we strive for.
